RYAN MARQUEZ JAZZ
A Versatile Ensemble for Any Occasion
Our ensemble is fully customizable to suit your event, with options ranging from an intimate piano trio to a lively six-piece jazz band. Featuring top-tier talent on bass, drums, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and/or guitar alongside my piano, we can tailor the group’s size and instrumentation to your specific needs. The Ryan Marquez Trio combines timeless jazz traditions with a fresh, contemporary sound, creating an infectious energy that will have your guests swaying, clapping, and craving more. Drawing inspiration from jazz legends like Ahmad Jamal, Ramsey Lewis, Thelonious Monk, and Oscar Peterson, as well as modern innovators such as Robert Glasper, The Bad Plus, and Brad Mehldau, we deliver a performance that’s both nostalgic and forward-thinking.
I was raised in Kansas City’s historic 18th and Vine District, where I was immersed in the heart of jazz culture from a young age. I had the privilege of learning from legends like Bobby Watson and jamming with top talents at The Blue Room. Later, I moved to St. Louis, where I honed my craft with the iconic Willie Akins band. Over the years, I've had the honor of performing alongside jazz luminaries such as Terence Blanchard, Randy Brecker, Kirk Whalum, Al "Tootie" Heath, Greg Osby, and Delfeayo Marsalis, which has solidified my reputation as a versatile and accomplished pianist.
With three trio albums—Moving Forward in Time (2018), Cosmic Perspective (2019), and It’s About Jam Time (2020)—I showcase my signature style: reimagined jazz standards, popular favorites, and original compositions filled with uplifting energy and catchy melodies. Influenced by Missouri’s rich musical heritage, my sound reflects the soulful spirit of Kansas City and St. Louis, where blues, gospel, and jazz all intertwine to inspire me.
While the piano trio is the foundation of my ensemble, I frequently expand to a quartet or quintet, adding instruments like saxophone, trumpet, trombone or guitar to create a richer, more dynamic sound—reminiscent of the iconic ensembles led by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers or Miles Davis' legendary quintets. I'm also known for collaborating with top vocalists from St. Louis and Kansas City, including Anita Jackson, Janet Evra, Erin Bode, Eboni Fondren, and Dawn Weber, adding a vocal dimension to my performances when desired. Known for my wide-ranging repertoire, I artfully balance jazz standards with inventive arrangements of pop songs by contemporary artists like Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Tears for Fears, No Doubt, and Nirvana. Whether setting an elegant mood for dinner music, entertaining during the main event, or leading spirited singalongs, my “walking jukebox” reputation speaks to my ability to tailor performances to any setting.
With over 30 years of experience, I've had the privilege of entertaining a diverse range of audiences, including Ken Burns, Wayne Gretzky, STL Cardinals alumni, and Mark Ronson. My music embodies themes of unity, love, and positivity, fostering meaningful connections with listeners across generations. Through the Ryan Marquez Trio—and beyond—I continue to celebrate jazz as a living art form, honoring its rich history while forging an exciting path toward the future.
